As it should be

For a long time we Czechs have been told that we are relatively equal in terms of wealth and income. We are neither very rich nor very poor, as in other countries. However, according to PAQ Research, this is slowly and increasingly becoming untrue. Already in our country, the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.

And what does that mean? It means that in addition to those who don\’t have to struggle, many others – a quarter of households, so to speak – are destined to live on a pittance: in 2021, 16% of households were still in this unfavorable situation, but two years of price increases have brought the figure to 26%. Those in this situation are mainly pensioners, single-parent families, and families with below-average incomes. This is because high inflation is hitting the most at-risk households, whose expenses are far higher than their incomes.

Thus, households with no money in hand and nothing saved from their current income can now talk about happiness as long as they do not fall into the red, or negative. In addition, an increasing number of households are unable to come up with even the truly necessary and essential items, such as heating bills and unexpected expenses. Furthermore, a significant number of households are spending more than in the past few years, but this is because they are buying additional items that they could not afford before but are necessary.

It is estimated that one-fifth of the poorest households have, on average, only about SEK 100,000 in assets, while one-fifth of the richest have over SEK 8 million and only 1% of all households own more than one-third of total household assets. In addition, while the poor have to pay the highest taxes, the wealthy have to pay the opposite. We don\’t differ much in income, but we do differ in property ownership. Some people criticize me for that, but I beg to differ. I see no reason why we should strive to be rich or poor. After all, we experienced it under the communists and know the consequences.
